Scene 1 · Intermediate

The wicked magician's mirror

English translation

Listen: our story is beginning! When it ends, we will probably know more than we do now.

English translation

Once there was a very wicked magician. He managed to make an extraordinary mirror and was delighted with his invention. Everything good and beautiful became so small in the mirror that it almost vanished, while everything ugly and useless grew enormous and looked ten times worse.

English translation

Lovely landscapes looked like boiled spinach in it. The faces of the most beautiful people were so distorted that even their friends could not have recognized them. Some seemed to be standing upside down. An ordinary freckle spread across a person's whole nose and mouth, and a kind thought was reflected in the mirror as a wrinkle.

English translation

The magician giggled as he admired his creation. He taught at a school of magic, and his pupils told everyone about the mirror. They claimed that at last it was possible to see the world and its people as they really were.
