Illustration for the scene “A duck waiting on her nest”

Scene 1 · Beginner

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was a warm summer in the countryside. Grain grew in the fields, hay lay in the meadows, and the forest was green all around. A stork walked across the meadow on long red legs. Among the trees were deep ponds.

English translation

An old house stood by the river. Between the house and the water grew burdocks with enormous leaves. The leaves were taller than a small child. Here, in a quiet place, a duck sat on her eggs, waiting for her ducklings. She was already tired: the ducklings were taking a long time to appear, and visitors came rarely. The other ducks liked swimming on the river and did not want to climb the slippery bank to her nest.
