Scene 1 · Intermediate

En ängel besöker Maria

An angel visits Mary

English translation

When Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. Mary lived there, a virgin who was engaged to Joseph, a descendant of David. The angel came in to see Mary and greeted her: “Rejoice, you who have received such great favor! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!”

English translation

Mary was troubled when she saw him and wondered what his greeting meant.

English translation

“Do not be afraid, Mary,” the angel said. “You have received God’s favor. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the same throne his ancestor David had.”

English translation

“He will rule over Jacob’s descendants forever, and his kingdom will never end.”

English translation

“How can that happen when I am a virgin?” Mary asked.

English translation

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will surround you like a shadow,” Gabriel replied. “That is why the holy child you give birth to will be called the Son of God. Your relative Elizabeth is also expecting a son, even though she is old. People said she could not have children, but now she is already in her sixth month.”

Swedish

Inget som Gud har sagt är omöjligt.”

English translation

“Nothing God has said is impossible.”

Swedish

”Jag är Herrens tjänarinna”, sa Maria. ”Låt det bli som du har sagt.”

English translation

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary said. “Let it happen as you have said.”

Swedish

Sedan lämnade ängeln henne.

English translation

Then the angel left her.
