Un angelo fa visita a Maria
An angel visits Mary
English translation
When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. The angel was to meet Mary, a virgin engaged to Joseph, a descendant of David. He went in to her and greeted her:
“Rejoice, Mary, you who are full of God’s grace! The Lord is with you. You are blessed among women!”

A quelle parole Maria rimase profondamente turbata.

At these words, Mary was deeply troubled. She wondered what such a greeting could mean. The angel reassured her:
“Do not be afraid, Mary, because God has shown you his favor. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, whom you will name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.”
English translation
“He will reign forever over the descendants of Jacob, and his kingdom will never end.”
English translation
“How can this happen, since I am a virgin?” Mary asked.
English translation
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you,” the angel replied. “For this reason, the holy child who will be born will be called the Son of God. Your relative Elizabeth is also expecting a child, despite her advanced age. People said she could not have children, and yet she is already six months pregnant.”
English translation
“Nothing God says is impossible.”
English translation
Mary replied, “I am the Lord’s servant. May what you have said happen to me.”
Italian
Poi l'angelo si allontanò.
English translation
Then the angel left.
