Un ángel visita a María
An angel visits Mary
Spanish
Cuando Isabel llevaba seis meses de embarazo, Dios envió al ángel Gabriel a Nazaret, una ciudad de Galilea. Debía visitar a María, una virgen comprometida en matrimonio con José, descendiente de David.
English translation
When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. He was to visit Mary, a virgin betrothed to Joseph, a descendant of David.
Spanish
«¡Alégrate, porque Dios te ha favorecido! El Señor está contigo. Bendita eres entre las mujeres», la saludó el ángel.
English translation
“Rejoice, for God has favored you! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women,” the angel greeted her.
Spanish
María se inquietó y se preguntó qué significaban aquellas palabras. Gabriel le pidió que no tuviera miedo: había encontrado favor ante Dios. Tendría un hijo al que llamaría Jesús. Sería grande y lo llamarían Hijo del Altísimo. Dios le daría el trono de su antepasado David y reinaría para siempre sobre los descendientes de Jacob. Su reino nunca terminaría.
English translation
Mary was troubled and wondered what those words meant. Gabriel told her not to be afraid: she had found favor with God. She would have a son whom she would name Jesus. He would be great and would be called the Son of the Most High. God would give him the throne of his ancestor David, and he would reign forever over the descendants of Jacob. His kingdom would never end.
Spanish
«¿Cómo puede ser eso, si soy virgen?», preguntó María.
English translation
“How can this be, since I am a virgin?” Mary asked.
Spanish
Gabriel le explicó que el Espíritu Santo vendría sobre ella y el poder del Altísimo la cubriría con su sombra. Por eso el santo niño sería llamado Hijo de Dios.
English translation
Gabriel explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her. That is why the holy child would be called the Son of God.
Spanish
Como señal de lo que Dios podía hacer, habló de su pariente Isabel: a pesar de su vejez y de que la habían considerado incapaz de tener hijos, ya estaba en el sexto mes de embarazo. Nada de lo que Dios decía era imposible.
English translation
As a sign of what God could do, he spoke of her relative Elizabeth: despite her old age and the fact that she had been considered unable to have children, she was already six months pregnant. Nothing God said was impossible.
Spanish
«Soy la sierva del Señor. Que se haga en mí según tu palabra», respondió María.
English translation
“I am the Lord’s servant. May it be done to me according to your word,” Mary replied.
Spanish
Entonces el ángel se retiró.
English translation
Then the angel departed.
