Scene 1 · Intermediate
Snow-white is born
English translation
Once upon a time, in the heart of winter, a queen sat sewing by a window. The window frame was made of ebony, a deep black wood, and outside the snowflakes fell like feathers. As she watched the snow, she pricked her finger with her needle. Three drops of blood fell onto the snow.
English translation
The red against the white looked so beautiful to her that she thought, “If only I had a child with skin as white as snow, cheeks as red as blood, and hair as black as the wood of this window frame.”
English translation
A little later, she gave birth to a daughter with exactly those colors. They named her Snow White. But the queen died when the child was born.
