Scene 1 · Intermediate
An angel visits Mary
English translation
Elizabeth was in the sixth month of her pregnancy when God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. Mary lived there. She was a virgin engaged to Joseph, who came from David’s family. The angel came in and greeted her:
“Rejoice! God has shown you great favor, and the Lord is with you.”
English translation
“You are blessed among women!”
English translation
Mary was troubled when she saw him and heard his words. She wondered what such a greeting could mean.
English translation
“Do not be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her. “God has shown you his favor. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, whom you will name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.”
English translation
“He will reign over the descendants of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”
English translation
“How can this happen, since I am a virgin?” Mary asked.
English translation
Gabriel answered her:
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you like a shadow. That is why the holy child you will give birth to will be called the Son of God. Even your relative Elizabeth is expecting a son in her old age.”
English translation
“Although she was called barren because she could not have children, she is already in the sixth month of her pregnancy. Nothing God says is impossible.”
English translation
“I am the Lord's servant,” Mary said. “Let it happen to me as you have said.”
English translation
Then the angel left her.
