Scene 1 · Intermediate

The emperor loves new clothes

English translation

Long ago there lived an emperor who adored new clothes and spent all his money on them. More than anything in the world, he wanted always to be beautifully dressed. He did not care about his soldiers, and the theater did not interest him. But he loved to ride out in his carriage so everyone could admire his new suit.

English translation

He had a different coat for every hour of the day. People said of other rulers, “The king is in his study.” But of this emperor, one could usually say, “The emperor is in his dressing room.”
