Scene 1 · Intermediate
Long ago, when wishes still came true, there lived a king. All his daughters were beautiful, but the youngest was so beautiful that even the sun, which had seen much in its lifetime, was astonished whenever it shone on her face.
A large, dark forest grew near the king’s castle. Beneath an old linden tree in the forest was a well. On especially hot days, the princess would go there and sit by the cool water. When she grew bored, she would take out her golden ball, toss it high into the air, and catch it. It was her favorite toy.
